New Roots Institute is a growing nonprofit dedicated to ending factory farming by empowering the next generation of advocates. Our fellowship programs train students to lead real-world campaigns that create structural and behavioral change in their communities. 

We’re seeking a passionate and experienced Manager of Community Building to join our team and help us deepen our impact.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Lead and mentor a team in managing the admissions process to recruit exceptional high school and college students.

  • Grow and diversify the applicant pool by increasing the number and quality of candidates.

  • Design and execute the recruitment strategy that drives this growth — leveraging ambassadors, alumni, and strategic partnerships to consistently generate a robust pipeline of values-aligned applicants.

  • Ensure successful cross-team coordination by leading collaboration with Marketing & Communications, Research & Design, and other departments — resulting in timely application launches, aligned messaging, and seamless applicant experiences.

  • Ensure the right candidates are accepted through a well-calibrated and equitable system of evaluation, interviews, and communication.

  • Develop and organize a strong student leadership network — activating peer connection and collective power to drive long-term engagement and impact.

  • Use data to drive improvement — analyzing recruitment and admissions trends to surface insights and refine strategies that increase reach, efficiency, and program fit over time.

  • Enhance external visibility and relationships by serving as a trusted representative of our organization to students, alumni, schools, partners, and collaborators, advancing our reputation and reach.

  • Influence organizational strategy by contributing insights and perspectives that shape recruitment priorities, partnership development, and long-term program design.

What We’re Looking For

Required Skills & Experience

  • Effective at people management (absolute minimum of 2+ years experience supervising direct reports). You possess a proven track record of effectively managing, mentoring, and developing teams. You are skilled at fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment, providing clear direction, offering constructive feedback, and empowering team members to achieve their full potential. 

  • Highly skilled in program and project management. You excel at planning, organizing, and executing complex programs and projects. You are adept at developing timelines, managing resources, mitigating risks, leading cross-functional teams, and ensuring projects stay on track and achieve desired outcomes.

  • Proficient in strong analytical, macro-level, and systems thinking. You are adept at assessing program effectiveness, identifying areas for improvement, and understanding how organizational components and the broader movement intersect to address systemic issues and optimize impact.

  • Strategic and creative in outreach and marketing. You have a strong grasp of outreach, branding, and messaging strategies, especially those that resonate with younger audiences. 

  • Experienced in working with youth or student populations. You bring direct experience working with high school and/or college-aged students. You understand how to build trust, motivate action, and create spaces where young people feel seen, supported, and inspired.

  • Able to hold yourself and others accountable for embodying values and achieving needed outcomes. You are comfortable setting clear expectations, tracking progress, providing direct feedback, and managing up to ensure alignment and support.

  • Proactive and solutions-oriented. You are a self-starter who anticipates challenges, takes initiative, and develops creative solutions. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and are driven to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of programs.

  • A strong communicator and collaborator. You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, enabling you to clearly articulate ideas, build consensus, and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including team members, fellows, alumni, and partner organizations.

Other Requirements

  • Shared vegan and anti-speciesist values. No one on our team consumes animals or animal products or believes that non-human animals can ethically be treated as resources for human use.

  • Ability to commit to attending the annual in-person team meeting, which typically takes place during the first full week of June (Monday through Friday).

Compensation and Benefits 

This is a full-time, remote position with a salary of $72,100 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, and unlimited PTO.

Hiring Process
